Sweet Pea Painted Lady

Price range: £1.19 through £9.99

A very popular and attractive pink and white heirloom bicolour from the 18th century. A Strong scent and popular as a very early sweet pea and consistently the first to flower.

Sweet Pea Painted Lady – Growing Instructions

  1. Plant sweet pea seeds in the spring, 4-6 weeks before the last expected frost
  2. Alternatively, plant in the autumn for stronger and earlier flowering plants.
  3. Soak the seeds in water for 12-24 hours before planting to improve germination.
  4. Sow the seeds 2 cm deep in pots or root trainers, as sweet peas require space for their long roots to grow properly.
  5. Water the seeds lightly after sowing. Wait until the seedlings have sprouted through the soil before watering again.
  6. Once the seedlings appear, move them to a cool location around 5°C. This cooler temperature will encourage root growth over stem growth.
  7. When the plant has produced 4 pairs of leaves or reached 10-15 cm tall, pinch out the central growing tip and leave around 2 leaf nodes. This will stimulate the plant to produce more side shoots.
  8. After the risk of frost has passed, transplant the seedlings to their final growing position.
  9. Space the plants 15-30 cm apart or plant two seedlings per vertical support structure.
  10. As the plants begin to grow, tie them to the support frame to help strengthen the stems.

Caution: Sweet pea seeds are poisonous if ingested.

Sweet Pea Painted Lady – Tips

• Feed the plants every 2 weeks to encourage continuous flowering.
• Remove any developing seed pods and regularly pick the flowers to ensure they keep producing flowers.
• Ensure the plants receive full sun exposure.
• Sweet Peas are susceptible to mildew. To prevent this issue, ensure the plants receive regular watering and are planted in well-draining soil.
