Lychnis Chalcedonia- Maltese new. A classic cottage garden Herbaceous border perennial producing brilliant scarlet red flowers held in dense upright clusters all summer. Commonly referred to as ‘Maltese or Jerusalem Cross’. Easy to grow and very hardy it will thrive in a wild range of conditions, even next to ponds. 18-36in when if flower. Can be cut back after initial flowering to encourage a second bloom. Excellent for attracting butterflies and bees.

Cultivation Advice Lychnis Chalcedonia- Maltese 

  •  Sow from early spring under cover ensuring a minimum soil temperature of 15C to achieve germination.
  • Seeds show be finely sown and covered with no more than 3mm of growing medium.
  • Prick out to small pots or trays when large enough to handle and grow on.
  • Harden off prior to planting out from May onwards.
  • Seeds can be sown up to mid Jul as the plants are hardy and will survive all but the harshest winter.
  • Plants may flower first year only from the earliest sowings.
